Surgical Services

• Cataract Surgery - A cataract is a clouding of the eye's naturally clear lens. The lens focuses light rays on the retina, the layer of light-sensing cells lining the back of the eye, to produce a sharp image of what we see. When the lens becomes cloudy, light rays cannot pass through it easily, and vision is blurred. In cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed from the eye through a surgical incision. In most cases, the natural lens is replaced with a permanent intraocular lens (IOL) implant .

• Corneal Transplantation - The cornea is the clear front layer of the eye. It serves to focus light and as a barrier for the eye. Certain conditions can give rise to poor clarity or curvature, requiring corneal transplantation. This is performed using human donor tissue. Corneal transplantation is the most common and successful form of organ transplantation.

• Glaucoma Management - The optic nerve carries the visual signal that the eye creates to the brain. Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged. This, in turn, leads to an insidious loss of vision. Prompt detection and management of glaucoma is crucial in preventing damage. Outstanding therapies for this disease include: eyedrops, laser and incisional surgeries.

• Diabetic Retinopathy - Those with diabetes are at risk of associated retinal problems such as: diabetic retinopathy, macular edema and ischemia, ocular hemorrhage and retinal detachment. Routine monitoring is crucial to the early detection and optimal management of these conditions.

• Macular Degeneration - The macula is the central region of the retina. It is responsible for generating the image in the eye, analagous to the film in a camera. Macular degeneration damages the retina and impairs vision. Appropriate monitoring and therapy are useful in optimizing visual outcomes in this condition.

• Dry Eye Syndrome - This common disorder manifests with symptoms of ocular irritation and blurred vision. Great improvement in comfort will result from optimal intervention including: conventional lubrication, therapy with "Restasis", and punctal closure.

• Uveitis - Uveitis is a condition of ocular inflammation. Its symptoms include light sensitivity, pain, blurred vision and redness of the eye. Its causes include infection or inflammatory conditions elsewhere in the body, such as arthritis. Often the cause of uveitis remains enigmatic. Prompt and appropriate therapy for uveitis is essential to minimize damage to vision and assure a fast recovery.
